Why Does Skin Get Drier in Fall and Winter?
Cold weather is only part of it. The bigger issue is lower humidity.
Your skin’s outer layer, called the stratum corneum, helps hold water in and keep irritants out. Mass General Brigham compares it to a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks, while proteins and fats act like the mortar holding everything together.[1]
When humidity drops, water can escape from that barrier more easily, which is why skin may start to feel dry, tight, or flaky.
Indoor heat can make that worse. Furnaces and fireplaces lower the amount of moisture in the air, so skin may lose water faster both outside and inside.
The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that a moisturizer that works well in summer may not feel like enough once humidity drops.[2]
That is also why a few common fall skincare tips actually matter: use warm instead of very hot water, apply moisturizer soon after washing, and consider a humidifier if the air in your home gets especially dry.[1][2]
You may also notice those changes showing up in your skin as the weather cools down. Tightness after cleansing, moisturizer that suddenly does not feel like enough, or lips that dry out faster are all common signs that your skin could use a little more moisture.
That does not mean you need a brand-new routine. Usually, a few small changes are enough.
Switch Up Your Moisturizer When You Need To
You do not have to use the same moisturizer every day just because it is fall.
If your skin still feels comfortable with something lightweight, keep using it. If it starts feeling drier, that is when it may make sense to reach for something richer.
Water Cream can still work when you want a lighter texture, while Tri Lipid Replenish Treatment is better for days when your skin feels like it needs more moisture.
It can be as simple as using one during the day and the other at night.
Do Not Overdo Your Routine
When skin starts feeling dry, the first instinct can be to add more products. That can make things harder to figure out.
Instead, keep your treatment steps simple. If you are using Peptide-X Advanced Serum, you can keep it in your evening routine and follow with moisturizer.
If your skin starts feeling irritated or flaky, look at how much you are using before adding anything new.
Do Not Wait Until Your Lips Are Chapped
Lips are usually one of the first places to feel the change in weather.
Keeping a lip mask nearby and using it before your lips get really dry can help. Nighttime is an easy time to use one, but there is no rule around it.
A Few Small Things That Help
Hot water can make skin feel even drier, so try to keep showers and face washing warm instead of very hot.
Indoor heat can also dry out the air. If your skin suddenly feels different once the heat is running, that may be part of it.
And if your routine still feels good? You do not need to change it just because the season did.
Fall skincare can be pretty simple: use a little more moisture when you need it, keep your routine steady, and pay attention to what your skin is actually doing.
